My second day started a lot like the first. I showed up to my Process Automation and Optimization class and the teacher never showed up. I waited for about 35 minutes just to make absolutely sure, but he never showed. Luckily in the afternoon the teacher showed up to my marketing class. It was nice to finally do something. The class was similar to most of the classes I have taken before. The teacher used powerpoint slides and then asked questions of the class. It was a lot like Ferris Bueller if you know what I mean (Anyone?, Anyone?). No one would answer anything. Eventually people started talking, but it was kind of funny because the only people who talked were from the United States.
Later that night they had a special event set up for all of the international students. First they took us to a brewery and then when went to a night club. The brewery was ok, but it was super packed and we had to sit outside in this tent-like structure where it was a bit chilly. We met some other study abroad students though and I think we are going to hang out with them sometime soon. The night club place was super packed as well and wasn't really the environment we were looking for. Mike and I left and went next store to An Brog, the pub we went to the other night, and we ran into one of our Irish friends that we met the other night. The DJ at An Brog was playing some awesome songs as well. He played some Public Enemy, Nirvana, M.I.A., MGMT, and The Ramones. Pretty solid set of tunes if you ask me.
My third day of classes went the best so far. I had Thermodynamics and Great Books in Philosophy 1. I don't have a whole lot to say about those classes except for the fact that both of the teachers showed up and I didn't get too bored in either class. Tomorrow I have more Thermodynamics and that's it. We are planning on hanging out with the other study abroad students we met tonight, and I'll go to sleep tonight wishing I could watch the BCS National Championship game.

Trev,
ReplyDeleteThe BCS Championship was a pretty good game. OK moved the ball well but failed to score two times when they were first and goal and had a field goal blocked. Mr. Duff is probably on a suicide watch
Gophers won an ugly defensive game against Iowa and are now 14-1. Penn State at the Barn on Sunday. I think Tyler is going with Uncle Steve.

Hi Trev,
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of funny when a good day of classes is a day when the teachers show up. Where are the other study abroad students from? Do they mostly speak English?
Love,
Debbie
Hi Trev,
ReplyDeleteSo were there a bunch of other students waiting for the teacher too? Have you gotten assignments from the classes where the teachers showed up? Maybe they don't take this trial period very seriously. Do you have plans for the weekend? We are enjoying your blog. Keep it up.
Love, Mom
To Debbie: There are study abroad students from all over the place, but the ones that we have hung out with most are from the US. We live with two girls from Canada, a girl from France, and one from Greece. Most speak English or some of English, but some are harder to understand.
ReplyDeleteTo Mom: Yeah, there was a class full of people waiting and then they all decided to leave, but I waited around for a little while longer. I haven't gotten any assignments yet, they don't really do a lot of those here. We hung out with a mixture of Irish and American people last night and I think we are going to hang out with them again today.
First day of orientation at UL, I was told that it is a known fact that Americans are the only ones that speak up in class. It's an Irish thing. I have no idea why.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having lots of fun! I'm following your adventures T-dog and seriously wishing I was in Ireland too!

Btw, this is what I heard for a couple hours last week at work: Thanks for calling UPS thisswayne.
